PA#2: Definition/ Division Paragraph

PA#2: Definition/ Division Paragraph

You will be meeting with a class member on Monday, January 17, to write a descriptive paragraph about that class member. Interview each other. Try to find an important characteristic of that person and write a paragraph about her or him and it.

Post that paragraph ASAP -- as soon as you can get to a computer and keyboard it in -- but certainly by Wednesday, 1/19/2011, so we can talk about it in class.

Important: You cannot possibly capture the entire person in one paragraph. As I hope you learned from the previous assignment, you must think of the paragraph you are writing as part of a whole essay. Isolate one defining characteristic and write a paragraph about it. Think about that one characteristic as part of a larger essay about the person, but don't try to write the entire essay. Write about that one characteristic that might be part of the larger essay.

We'll talk in class about how to organize the paragraph. However, please note that you'll be looking for a defining characteristic for the topic sentence, and you'll be isolating a PARALLEL set of sub-characteristics that subdivide and develop the main characteristic.

  1. Becca is a very social and active person, which is reflected in several aspects of her life. Her choice of major and minor are reflective of her social and active personality. She is a computer science major and an economics minor so she is well prepared for her career goal of being an event planner. She wants to live in Canada and plan parties and charity events and other functions, which imaginably is a very social and active job. Her family and family life also keeps her very active and social. She is one of six siblings and while growing up she moved around a lot. She moved from Canada to the UK to Cincinnati, and finally to Connecticut. At each new place, she had to meet new people, thus forcing her to be social.

  2. Music and love of the Japanese culture are what help to define the passions of Rebecca Larkin. With a double major in music performance and East Asian studies, Rebecca can be seen putting her heart into both of these subjects. Flute and the piccolo are the two instruments that she plays here at Ohio Wesleyan. When required to practice her instruments it is more of a hobby then a chore for her. As well as music the Japanese culture has fascinated Rebecca since the seventh grade. Due to such things as anime and manga, her love for eastern culture grew over the years. Because of her love of the Japanese culture Rebecca chose to look into such things as its feudal history. In the future Rebecca hopes to combine both of her loves and create video game music for such video games that are similar to such as the Final Fantasy series and the Kingdom Heats series.

  3. Dr. Burns is a father, husband, and writer with interests including film and exercise, but his true passion is teaching. He is a college professor at Ohio Wesleyan University, where he has worked for 21 years. He teaches both the Freshman Writing Seminar and Writing for the Workplace. Although two vastly different courses, Dr. Burns receives equal enjoyment from the success of his students in his upper and lower level classes. He also teaches at Perkins Observatory, with a far younger audience. It is in this setting, that one of Dr. Burn’s professional fundamentals is exemplified, “a good teacher or writer must always adapt to their audience.”

  6. There are many students on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University; however, there is only one Jess Halsey. Jess plays many parts on this stage called life, but, she believes that her most important role is as a student. Beginning at a young age, Jess valued any chance that she could to learn, which is why she began to play soccer. The lessons of teamwork and perseverance learned by playing soccer accompanied her into her high school years. It was during these years where she picked up the saxophone and learned about the power of music. Her insistent drive for learning pushed her to become part of the band and develop into a student that simply does not give up. Because of her life pattern of constant learning, she became a student at Ohio Wesleyan University with the rigorous major in zoology. Although Jess will one day graduate from college and will no longer technically be a student, she will be continually learning as a rehab specialist with animals. There she will grow in her knowledge of the best treatment for animals and perhaps one day she will become the teacher herself.

  7. Jessica is a very intelligent and career oriented student at Ohio Wesleyan University. Even though she is just a freshman, she has already decided on a major in Psychology and a minor in Political Science. She is interested in developmental psychology and holds a job at the childcare center here on campus. Besides her schoolwork, Jessica is involved in a few clubs like College Democrat, and Colleges against Cancer. She really enjoys discussing politics, so the College Democrat club is a great fit. Jessica lives in Hayes residential hall and really likes it. The only negative thing about living there, she says, is that the people living above her are so loud that it sounds like “bodies are hitting the floor.”

  13. I thought her beautiful.... She has long golden locks which cascades into her face. Her skin is rich, soft and creamy tainted with a little rosy which radiates from her cheeks. Her eyes are delicate but fiercely amber- green which grabs the attention of anyone. I was definitely intrigued by her grace and eloquence and her name Ms. Annalise Harvey. This Ohioan beauty finds her interests in golf and has recently joined the school’s golf team. She has an eclectic taste for all forms of music and plays the piano as a hobby. She loves to shop and has great taste in fashion and style .This golf playing fashionista discovered the depth of her purpose during high school by helping children with special needs during her lunch breaks. Since then her love for teaching exploded into a true passion and has decided to become a teacher specializing in Special education. Naturally she spends much of her time nowadays volunteering in Delaware schools and the Early Childhood Centre- impacting the lives of many children. I admired her aspiration to teach children and you could easily think of her as a guardian Angel for these little ones. When she finds time for herself ,Anna likes to make ceramics .She loves how therapeutic it is and expounded on how magnificent it is to just slowdown and turn useless clay into something significant.

  15. As a freshman student at Ohio Wesleyan, Ashley has taken part in many diverse activities and hobbies, but after the process of adapting to college life she is still able to enjoy all that nature has to offer. As a resident of Ohio, Ashley has spent much of her time outdoors and treasures sunlight and fresh air as long as it is not cold. From her home town in Grafton, Ohio, Ashley has had the luxury of living on a five acre land plot scattered with a pool, trampoline, trails, and a garden. Throughout her years at home, Ashley has had many delightful memories of traveling the landscape with others on four wheels and go-carts and playfully mooing when driving past the neighboring cows. Although home serves as a very important aspect to her life, Ashley finds it most pleasurable to spend her time at the beach where the calming sounds of the waves crashing against the shore beckon for her to take a nap as the sun warms her skin. It is most thrilling when walking along the beach sifting through the shells to find perfect smooth pieces of glass, otherwise known as sea glass. Although college life can be hectic and demanding, Ashley will always find time in her schedule to spend outdoors.

He really enjoys American film with an extra love for the gangster genre. Avi also enjoys such genres as fantasy, super hero, and humor films. Through this love of basketball, Kalee is attending Ohio Wesleyan as an education major. Being from Columbus, Kalee is still able to get the full college experience by living here on campus in Hayes Hall. Even so, Kalee has decided not to join a sorority because she is so busy with basketball and school. She explained that to her, the basketball team has become her own kind of sorority. All of this exemplifies her great time management skill. Ultimately, Kalee's amount of free time and seemingly low amounts of stress reveal her impressive self awareness.

  18. Although science is her calling and preferred major interest, Breane Budaitis has also enjoyed and continues to fancy an array of artistic forms in her life. Over the years, she has grown to admire three-dimensional art, though she is not one to make a piece, but simply to enjoy the artistic creativity of what others have made. Along with sculptures and similar art forms, she also enjoys the artistry of music, which she expressed by playing both the piano and French horn throughout her middle and high school career. Furthermore, with the French horn, she has been able to express the uniqueness of being left-handed. Yet, regardless of her appreciation of fine arts, to Breane, running could be considered one of her favorite crafts. To be swift on your feet takes grace and endurance, which she has proven she obtains while running track in high school and amongst her friends here at OWU or alone to relieve stress. This scientist in the making knows that life is not all statistics and equations, but also contains beauty and creativity to be admired.

  19. It is difficult to find people who show what they care about, but Holly is one of them. You can tell what is important to her by the way her face lights up when she is speaking. One aspect that had Holly's face shining was mentioning one of her best friends, her boyfriend. It was obvious from the start that she cared deeply about him and that spending time with him made college more enjoyable. Although Holly has been enjoying college, she also cares about her home life. She may be an only child, but she talks about her pets as though they were her siblings. It was hard to miss how much Holly cared about her pets, especially her cat Socks, who she has grown up with. Being the caring person that she is helps to encourage Holly to set high expectations for herself, and meet those expectations. Holly works to become the best person she can be.

According to the dictionary, grace is beauty in a form of action or manner. Grace hopes to help these victims to get back onto their feet and lead successful lives. She understands that she is only one person but Grace has aspirations to author books, articles, and any other form of media to reach an audience world-wide to inspire debilitated women to not give up and continue their lives in a positive manner. Kevin Chung comes from a life filled with excitement and diversity, but some of the greatest aspects of his up-bringing certainly revolve around the events that shaped him into the passionate soccer player that he is today. The Louden County, Virginia native was first introduced to the sport at the young age of three. He would kick a soccer ball around in the back of his parent's restaurant, Orient Kitchen, with the employees during some downtime. However, the childhood memories that he holds close to him have blossomed into successful talent. Now that he calls himself an Ohio Wesleyan student, he also proudly calls himself a soccer player at a division four school.

  28. Karena is a proactive first year student at Ohio Wesleyan. She enjoys spending ample time in nature, which is reflected in her major in Environmental Studies as well as her lifestyle at OWU. She appreciates the quaint Ohio terrain more than a native Ohioan, coming from a town in which she calls home to a subdivision in Texas, lacking trees spanning over 10 feet tall and the natural flora and fauna that should exist there. Not only does she take every opportunity she can to spend under the subtle Ohio sky, she is also integritable about the environment and lives an ecologically sustainable lifestyle. For example, Karena is a vegetarian because she does not believe in harming animals. She also makes sure not to waste anything, even if this means bringing her own coffee mug to HamWill to put coffee she orders into. Regardless of whether or not others are watching her, she makes sure to care about the environment and be respectful of what's around her. She is thinking of applying to live at either the Peace and Justice House or the Tree House next semester, and from her attitudes towards others, she seems like the perfect candidate to live in such activist environments.

  31. Chris Badenhop switched his majors from Politics & Government to a double major in Geography and Environmental Studies. He says that it was a natural move for him as he wanted to restore natural fish populations and break down dams. Not, in his words, “live off the American tax system”. Surprisingly, this OWU freshman loves to hunt deer, squirrels, rabbits and pheasants. If that wasn't enough, he also loves to fish in farm ponds and sell raccoon skins. All of these activities fall in direct contrast to his Environmental Studies major. Does he have anything to say about that?

"Well, that’s what people think, man" he says, "Being an environmentalist doesn't mean you've to be a tree hugger."

Samantha has been in the singing business for the majority of her life, and since middle school she has partaken in choirs and musicals. Throughout her high school days, she took voice lessons; however, her school did not take part in choirs or musical performances because her school did not hold any musical performances. To this day at Ohio Wesleyan, she still sings, partakes in choirs, and is still involved with voice lessons. As a result of her passion for music, it has helped her decide that her major will be in Vocal Performance.

  34. Every moment counts, every memory is remembered in a way which can illuminate a grown woman’s childish heart. But what seems to be weary in the mind of Jess is that “why do we always remember the bad then the good sometimes?” As she pondered through her files of memories she brought herself back to grade six. Like any other six grader the excitement to travel with a team can easily make oneself giddy. Such as, the time when Jess attended the worst softball summer league known to man. The irony that brought her back to remember such a time was that they were “ THE UNDERDOGS!” as she so boldly said. They won by one run, impossible but as those underdogs barked aloud they made their way to good ‘ol Alabama. As these championship qualifies arrived they were taken about by the pin exchanging and the quantity of teams. Everyone has a child inside of them, it’s just about bringing yourself back to remember those good times.
