Topic for Research Project

In a downshifted paragraph, describe the topic you have chosen for your research project. You may want to do some preliminary reading so that you can have more than one sentence to say about the subject. Remember, you should try to narrow the focus and pick a subset of the more general topic. Also, try to discover a argumentative thesis -- some part of the topic that has inspired some controversy and on which you can generate an argumentative thesis.

Please blog your paragraph ASAP but surely by Monday.

  1. One often overlooked technological problem is cyber bullying. Especially in today’s society, cyber bullying has become more prominent. This is why I have picked cyber bullying as my general topic for my English research paper. I plan to focus my research on the negative psychological effects of cyber bullying. I will also analyze the implications of cyber bullying and provide some possible solutions to this growing issue.

  2. Nuclear energy; abundant, clean, easy to dispose of, environmentally friendly, and reliable, this source of alternative energy is one of the finest methods of electricity that the world currently has. Although there are many benefits with nuclear energy, the chance of a meltdown and the resulting spread of radiation, is frightening enough to make countries carefully think about choosing this as its source of power. One instance of a horrific nuclear meltdown was Chernobyl back in April of 1986, and this is the topic that I will research for my paper. In my paper, I will elaborate on the negative impact that nuclear energy can have on the environment and people.

  4. A stock market bubble occurs when investors drive up stock prices to a level that is not maintainable in the market. One of the most well known bubbles of the twentieth century was the Dot-com bubble of the late 1990s. The bubble was based on speculation regarding the development of new technologies. The results of the bubble had detrimental economic effects on the government, the markets, and market participants.

  5. As technology constantly grows to be more convenient for the average person, this may not always be true for music producers. Each year it becomes easier to download music for free via the internet and bypass paying the artists what the music is worth. It has already been seen to be a problem for all types of music artists, as well as for the government who cannot crack down on the millions of Americans who have hundreds of illegally downloaded files saved to their hard drives. In my paper I plan to discuss the impact of music piracy on music itself as well as it's effect on the artists who now "put out CDs as essentially promotional tools, not as end products" (USA Today).I also plan to investigate where music piracy is headed, as well as its consequences for our nation.

  6. Deforestation is a major environmental dilemma. As developing countries try to compete with larger developed countries, their natural resources are often damaged. Brazil, one of the largest developing countries in the world, possesses part of the Amazon Rain Forest. The Amazon is the largest forest in the world and has the highest eco-diversity of all ecosystems. As Brazil is attempting to modernize, its greatest resource, the rain forest, is being destroyed. This is causing a problem for the unique species and indigenous people who live off the rain forest. One major controversy is the building of highways through the Amazon. While some need of reliable transportation is needed to support the cities economies, many local species and people are suffering from the permanent damage done to the rain forest. The country is divided.

  7. The Love Canal has become a major environmental and health issue for the residence of the area and for the United States. The area around the Love Canal has been affect in many ways by the decisions of the military and several chemical companies to dump chemical waste into the canal. However, the people who bought the land and built the homes and schools did so with the knowledge of the chemical waste. Now the residents of the area have had many health problems and much of the area had to be torn down and the residents had to move. The people who are at fault for the health problems of hundreds of people in the area are those who knowingly purchased the land and not necessarily the military and companies who dumped the waste.

  8. Technology has many advancements that, when in the right hands, can do wonderful things. However, people are currently using technology in order to sell women and children's bodies for sex. Sex traficking is a terrible and painful situation for those involved and it is now being done over the internet. Sex trafickerrs are making millions of dollars by exploiting women and children on the internet or selling them to far away countries. What is currently happening to millions of women and children is disgusting and a topic that needs to be addressed in societies all over the world

  9. As the world continues to become more technologically advanced, a new and improved way of living becomes apparent within society. On the other hand, the new technology has also proven detrimental to the world. In the Exxon Oil Spill, public relations of the Exxon shipping company heighted the problem and effects of the oil spill. To start with, the shipping company ignored the extent of the problem and initially refused outside help from residents and environmental volunteers. In addition, the company blamed Alaska and the Coast Guard for the slow cleanup process instead of taking responsibility for the cleanup.

  10. Every year in either late October or early November the mighty Mekong River, saturated with the waters of Southeast Asia’s annual monsoon, overwhelms its much smaller tributary the Tonle Sap River. This reversal of flow and the ensuing flood of much of the tiny country of Cambodia has helped sustain the people of Cambodia since the dawn of civilization. However, this ancient way of life is no threatened by the steamroller that is modernization and technology. The Mekong Rivers overbearing big brother, China, now sees the river as both transportation and hydroelectric goldmine into western China, Cambodia, and Laos. China has already dammed up its northern section of the river which has already caused many negative side effects. Fishermen in Cambodia have seen a reduction in their annual yields and the silt load of the river that comes mainly from the northern China has been reduced dramatically as a result of the current damming.

  11. In the modern day an age, pornography has become a part of the lives of many people around the world. Restrictions have been enforced upon pornography but none so much as child pornography. Child pornography has been floating around the internet for many years and for just as long law and legislation has been passed in order to protect the lives of children under the age of 18. The United States has created and withheld many laws that restrict that access and creation of Child Pornography. Society as a whole has come together to try to end the abuse of children in pornographic materials.

  12. Genetic engineering is a very prevalent in sciences now. Because of all of the things genetic engineering could change it has upset many people and their "ethics". The ethical issues that have been brought up are very interesting because of all of the things it could improve. People are trying to stop something that could provide food to starving and save people from not being able to walk. The benefits are endless if ethics wasn't holding genetic engineering back.

  13. One of the areas most affected by global warming is the Beaufort Sea in the Arctic. Caused by the burning of fossil fuels that release heat-keeping gasses into the atmosphere, global warming has begun to melt the Beaufort Sea's year-round layer of ice. As a result, the animals that inhabit the area have become severely harmed. The flooding caused by the melting of the ice has also forced many humans to relocate their homes away from the shores. Global warming and the acts of humans is endangering the lives of humans and various species that reside in the Arctic.

  14. There are many technological disasters, but some of them may be prevented. There are policies in place that are used to prevent and to clean up these disasters. The United States has a policy for some technical disasters and companies could learn from previous disasters that could prevent future ones. The Exxon oil spill was a terrible disaster, but it could have been used to prevent other disasters. The BP oil spill could have been prevented by learning from the previous oil spills.

  15. Broadway companies are losing money thanks to piracy. Nowadays, there are plenty of people who video tape the shows and then post them on YouTube. The internet marketers spend the majority of their time asking YouTube to remove videos, but as one goes down, ten more go up behind it. Modern technology makes it incredibly simple to steal almost anything. Although laws are in place to try to prevent this, technology advances more quickly than the laws can keep up with.

  16. The controversy surrounding the spread of nuclear weapons among smaller nations is becoming more prevalent as more and more nations face uprisings and protests. While some suggest that nuclear proliferation will decrease the chances of war, others think it will only create mass destruction in troubled regions of the world. It is crucial, as a country that supports peace, to ponder the implications of selling weapons to warring nations.

  17. With each technological advancement we as humans also become more advanced. This stays true for the advances made in recombinant DNA and genetic engineering. People are allowed to undergo plastic surgery in order to change themselves. It only follows that people should be allowed to use genetic engineering to change their genes for future generations. If over time these technological advancements could end certain diseases and disorders, why not use this technology for personal preference as well?

  19. Genetic engineering, better known as genetic modification is the process of direct human manipulation of ones organism’s genetics. Technology has given humans the tools to redesign and alter the genetic makeup of an organism. As this may help decrease and potentially cure diseases and can give an organism useful traits. But how far will one go with modifying oneself makeup? There are several pros and cons for the scientific issue. Unfortunately we might be getting ahead of ourselves and overlooking the best options for our environment and the human creation.

  20. Though there are many natural disasters that befall the planet earth, one stands out as an avoidable disaster: acid rain. Through ionization, cleansing, cooling, and rejuvenating rainwater can be transformed into a deadly precipitate that causes harm to the planet. Through new information being discovered every day, the threat to the environment, known as acid rain, can be prevented, if not completely eliminated.

  21. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter have become a norm in today's society; however, their use as a tool to cyber-bully also seems to become a norm. Students, especially gay males, are targeted on these sites and because of cyber-bullying some of them take their own lives. Today, there are states that are taking legal action against cyber-bullies to hopefully draw more awareness to this problem.

  22. Some industrial disasters are caused by such gross negligence that its perpetrators should be subjected to nothing but the most harsh legal punishments. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy, widely accepted as the worst industrial disaster in human history, is one such case.Ironically, the seven defendants implicated in this case have been let off with minimal sentences and paltry fines. I'll be focusing mostly on the why the gas leak happened, including the months of negligence that preceded it.Also,I'll be mentioning the aftermath of the incident, including a few survivor accounts. As always though,I might change my focus if I find a meatier topic about the Bhopal Gas tragedy.

  23. As technology continues to advance and become part of our everyday lives, the manipulation of technology for personal gain has increased. Music has been part of human culture for as long as the race has existed. The controversy of piracy of music has been a struggle for well over a decade. Napster and Limewire have been sued constantly and even shut down due to musicians/artists. However, the effects of piracy isn't as black and white as many make it out to be. Musicians do lose profit when fans download their music illegally rather than buying their CDs, however, free music means free publicity for musicians. Musicians earn more off merchandise and ticket sales than CDs anyways. The only party hurt in this exchange are the record labels that produce the compact discs for sale.

  24. The Hindenburg Disaster is a historical event that has left the world in awe. So many theories have been developed as to how the technology went awry, but personally, I know very little about the tragic occurrence. These theories all focus on the cause of the ignition that set the airship up in flames. My goal for writing this research paper is to inform myself about what could have possibly happened.

  25. The expanse of the great Amazon rainforest is subject to deforestation everyday as economic inflation controls its future. Ever since the beginning of forest clearing for commercial cattle pastures, the act has taken a toll on the Amazon forests inhabitants. Deforestation has influenced the lives and homes of the natives and the animals residing under its canopy and near its river. Natives that call the forest home, not only have to deal with commercial logging and forest clearing, but illegal forms of these acts as well. The Amazons vast shelter is home to millions of species of plants and animals, some that have yet to be discovered. The deforestation industry has caused devastating effects on the natives, flora, and fauna of the Amazon rainforest.

  26. Global Warming has affected the life style of the entire world and the progress of technology. The harmful gasses being released into the atmosphere need to be decreased in order to slow down global warming. A solution to this issue is the use of windmills as an alternate source of energy. In order to reduce the carbon being released into the atmosphere, windmills are a clean energy solution. The benefits of windmills are overwhelming, but do not always outweigh the disadvantages.
